The Best Day-Trips on the Huntsville Chain of Lakes: A Boater’s Guide

The Best Day-Trips on the Huntsville Chain of Lakes: A Boater’s Guide

One of the most unique features of boating in Huntsville is our interconnected chain of four major lakes: Lake Vernon, Fairy Lake, Peninsula Lake, and Mary Lake. Combined, they offer over 40 miles (64 km) of navigable water, winding rivers, and historic locks.

Whether you are piloting a sleek Lund fishing boat or a comfortable Bennington pontoon, here are three "Must-Do" day-trips for your next Muskoka adventure.

1. The Downtown Dock & Dine (Fairy Lake to Town Dock)

Start your morning on Fairy Lake and head west toward the historic Huntsville Swing Bridge. This is one of the few places in Ontario where you can dock your boat right in the heart of a bustling downtown.

  • The Stop: Use the public Town Docks to park and explore Huntsville’s boutique shops and local restaurants.

Insider Tip: Time your passage under the bridge to catch a glimpse of the antique steam train at Lion's Lookout from the water.

2. The "Big Water" Run to Port Sydney (Fairy Lake to Mary Lake)

For those looking for a full-day excursion, head south from Fairy Lake through the Brunel Lift Locks. These locks connect you to Mary Lake, a majestic body of water known for its rugged shorelines and eight unique islands.

  • The Destination: Navigate to the southern tip of Mary Lake to find the village of Port Sydney.

  • The Stop: Anchor near Port Sydney Beach for a swim or a picnic at one of the most spectacular waterfronts in Muskoka.

3. The Sunset Cruise & Shoreline Tour (Peninsula Lake)

"Pen Lake" offers over 27 km of natural shoreline and is a favorite for those seeking a mix of luxury and tranquility.

  • The Route: Cruise past the world-class Deerhurst Resort and take in the view of the golfers and treetop trekkers from the water.

  • The Stop: Look for the small, private bays on the eastern end—perfect for dropping anchor and watching a classic Muskoka sunset.
